ABOUT THE CLIENT
The Color Run™ LLC own and operate a series of popular five-kilometre paint races across the world, known as the ‘Happiest 5k on the Planet’. The series aims to spread love, fun and colour to more than 50 countries and over 300 events worldwide. In the UK alone, over 85,000 ‘Color Runners’ from all walks of life get stuck into the spirit of The Color Run.
Each event celebrates healthiness, happiness, individuality and aims to give back to the local community. Participants are showered with coloured powder as they look to complete a 5km course at the venue and enjoy the colour festival activities after the 5km.
WHY THE NEC?
The client was looking for a large, open space with enough room for separate warm-up, start and finish points, as well as interesting sights to keep the 5km route exciting. It was important that the route wasn’t looped, to keep the element of surprise every 1km when the runners are showered with coloured powder.
The event also operated on staggered release times, so good venue transport links and accessibility were key to ensure smooth arrival and flow through pre-event, race and post-event.
Arrival and registration took place in Hall 5, with direct entry out to the closed-roads and paths for participants to make their way onto and around the 5km course. The finish line and colour festival were located within an NEC car park.
For a 10,000-person event, aimed at a wide-range of audiences from young families to adult teams, using a variety of indoor and outdoor spaces, challenges were expected. However, the experienced NEC team ensured the event ran smoothly and no issues were encountered at any stage. The client commented: “The NEC is a venue that meets all of our event needs with fantastic transports links. Everything was well prepared and handled perfectly.”
The client was hugely impressed with the NEC team and their event management skills. The Color Run utilised all offered internal services, which made running the event for the client immeasurably easier than bringing many external services onsite. The extensive knowledge of the venue team saved both time and money for the client, avoiding delays to an already short turnaround event by minimising requirement for external supplier briefing.
Patrick Toland, Senior Operations Manager for the Color Run, said: “It is an absolute delight to work with NEC staff on the Birmingham Color Run. Their passion for the event and enthusiasm for their work makes delivering it such an enjoyable experience for everyone involved. It’s really nice to work alongside a venue who is so supportive and it’s a pleasure working alongside the NEC team.”
